Shams Tarek
Deputy Commissioner for External Affairs

Shams Tarek is Deputy Commissioner for External Affairs, leading its operations, which encompasses OGS’s Curatorial and Visitor Services teams, Empire State Plaza Convention Center and Cultural Events, Communications, and the Digital and Media Services Center. Additionally, he is responsible for helping to establish policy and procedures, coordinate public-facing efforts of the agency’s various divisions, and elevate awareness for the agency’s vast array of responsibilities and services.

Shams has more than 20 years of public service experience in federal, state, and municipal government. He has directed integrated external engagement programs for some of the largest and most complex entities, including the NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the NYS Division of the Budget, and the NYS Executive Chamber. He also led external engagement strategy for the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, as well as for members of the NYS Senate, U.S. Congress, and NYC Council. Prior to his public sector career, he was a newspaper reporter in New York City.

Shams has a BA in English literature from Pace University.
