New York State Office of General Services (OGS) Commissioner Jeanette Moy today announced the completion of construction on a new 200,000-square-foot warehouse in Green Island, New York, by Luizzi Companies. The new warehouse consolidates four Capital Region warehouses that OGS previously leased to keep state-owned inventory into a single leased warehouse and distribution center.
“Team OGS is proud to celebrate the opening of this new warehouse, which is now home to our Support Services division, dedicated to delivering operational and logistical excellence for New Yorkers,” Commissioner Moy said. “Located in Green Island, this centralized space creates greater efficiency, stronger collaboration, and improved service for our state agency partners and the New Yorkers they serve. Constructed by Luizzi Companies, this facility reflects our agency's commitments to sustainability, equity, best value, and outstanding customer service. I’d like to thank everyone who made this a success, from our community partners to the project team."
Built by Luizzi Companies, the new facility features a range of measures to reduce its carbon footprint, including ENERGY STAR-certified mechanicals, LED lighting on occupancy sensors, and a well-insulated building exterior. The 25 Tibbits Avenue site is easily accessible by staff who commute using public transit. It also features bicycle racks and electric vehicle chargers to encourage the use of other green modes of transportation.
By consolidating the four existing warehouses located in Menands, Guilderland, and two in Albany into one site in Green Island, the amount of equipment needed for daily operations has been reduced, and more staff will be available to respond to agencies’ requests and distribution priorities. These four warehouses stored a range of items for more than 10 state agencies, from public outreach materials to IT equipment, which are being moved to the Green Island facility.
This project is part of OGS’s efforts to streamline and consolidate state agency warehouse and storage operations by creating a comprehensive inventory and reviewing and eliminating warehouse space as needed. Since 2012, OGS has helped the state assess options for warehousing, including whether an agency’s existing warehouse locations are efficiently managed. To date, OGS’s evaluation of 29 leased warehouses for 27 agencies has resulted in cost savings of $1.7 million and a reduction of 430,000 square feet in excess warehouse space.
This warehouse brings together OGS’s Food Distribution, State and Federal Surplus, and Fleet Management teams into one workplace, improving service delivery, collaboration, and real-time communication.
Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy said, “The opening of this warehouse is an important milestone, bringing new investment, jobs, and opportunity to our community. The decision to base this facility locally strengthens our economy and demonstrates that Green Island is a place where smart, long-term investment belongs. The inclusion of green features such as energy-efficient lighting and electric vehicle charging stations demonstrates a forward-thinking approach that aligns with Albany County’s values of sustainability. I would like to thank Governor Kathy Hochul, Commissioner Jeanette M. Moy, and the entire Office of General Services for their continued investment into our community. I would also like to commend Luizzi Companies for their outstanding work and take pride in seeing a family-owned, local business deliver a project of statewide importance.”
Assemblymember John T. McDonald III, RPh said, "It is great to join OGS and the Luizzi Companies today in celebrating the opening of this new warehouse facility in Green Island. As someone who drives by this site daily, I have watched it transform from a blank field into the beautiful facility we see today. This project will strengthen vital state services like food distribution and surplus management, and shows our commitment to sustainable building practices. Green Island has a long tradition of innovation, and this facility will bring new opportunities that benefit both our region and all New Yorkers.”
Albany County Legislator Maggie Alix said, “The transformation of the former junkyard and brownfield site into a state-of-the-art facility is proof of what collaboration can achieve. This project not only revitalizes the Tibbits Avenue corridor for the Village of Green Island but also brings new opportunity as the home of the New York State Office of General Services. It’s a powerful example of economic development in action and a symbol of a stronger, growing Albany County.”
Village of Green Island Mayor Ellen McNulty-Ryan said, "If ever there was an example of what a perfect Public/Private partnership should look like – THIS IS IT. The transformation of this piece of property is truly remarkable. What was for many years an eyesore is now the most attractive property in town. And we look forward to having the staff members of OGS join us daily in our little village. Commissioner Moy and Peter Luizzi of the Luizzi Companies have shown us what can be accomplished when we work together for the good of the people. I applaud them and extend my sincerest appreciation for what they have done for Green Island and New York State."
CEO of Luizzi Companies, Peter Luizzi Jr. said, “We are proud to partner with New York State OGS on this transformative project. This facility represents not only an investment in Green Island but also a commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure that supports the State’s mission for decades to come.”
