ATFS Logo
American Tree Farm System (ATFS) Certification

The American Tree Farm System (ATFS) is an internationally recognized forest certification program in the United States. Endorsed by the  Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), ATFS Certification is designed to promote sustainable forest management practices in privately-owned woodlands. The ATFS certification standards require landowners to maintain a written forest management plan that demonstrates sustainable forestry practices. The standards ensure compliance with all relevant laws, protection of water, soil, biodiversity, and wildlife habitat, and the maintenance of forest health through responsible regeneration and harvesting. Landowners must also identify and protect special ecological, cultural, or historical sites while considering overall forest aesthetics.

American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA) Field Tested Certified (AFTC)

Product Directory

The Art and Creative Materials Institute’s Approved Product (AP) Seal identified art supplies that safe and non-toxic. Products with the AP Seal have been evaluated by certified toxicologists and were found to contain no harmful materials or ingredients in significant quantities. The AP Seal is used to certify the safety of paints, markers, glues, and other creative materials.

BIFMA Level Logo
BIFMA LEVEL

BIFMA LEVEL is a third-party sustainability certification program for commercial furniture that evaluates products and manufacturers across environmental, social, and governance criteria. Based on the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Sustainability Standard, it assesses areas such as material selection, energy and water use, human and ecosystem health, and social responsibility throughout the product life cycle. Products can achieve LEVEL 1, 2, or 3 certification, reflecting increasing levels of sustainability performance. The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is a nonprofit organization that certifies commercially compostable products such as disposable food service ware bags, and gloves that meet the requirements of ASTM D6400 (for compostable bioplastics such as PLA) or ASTM D6868 (for paper coated with bioplastic) based on testing in an approved laboratory. California Air Resources Board (CARB) Certified

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is the state agency responsible for protecting public health by improving and maintaining air quality in California. CARB develops and enforces the state’s rigorous air pollution control standards including vehicle emissions, industrial sources, and materials that emit harmful compounds. CARB Certification requires third-party testing, quality control procedures, and facility audits to ensure products meet the agency’s low emission standards. CARB Certified products help protect indoor air quality and are widely recognized as a benchmark for reduced emissions and safer materials.

Prop 65
California’s Proposition 65 (CA Prop 65)

CA Prop 65, which is officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings to consumers about significant exposures to chemicals that can cause cancer, birth defects or other types of reproductive toxicity. CSA Group Logo
Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Forest Management Certification

The Forest Management Certification from the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), is one of Canada’s leading forestry certification programs. It requires forest managers to develop and implement a comprehensive, science-based forest management plan that protects biodiversity, water, soil, wildlife habitat, and ecosystem services across large forest areas. The CSA standard places strong emphasis on public participation, requiring ongoing consultation with local communities, Indigenous peoples, and stakeholders in forest planning and decision-making. Under PEFC endorsement, CSA-certified forests and products are globally recognized for meeting rigorous, independently audited sustainability and chain-of-custody requirements.

The CSA Listed certification indicates that an appliance or piece of equipment has been tested, evaluated, and verified to meet CSA safety standards. Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA) Approved

Product Directory

CMA-Approved is a program developed by the Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA), a partnership of compost manufacturing facilities and product manufacturers. CMA certifies disposable food service ware and bags that meet the requirements of ASTM D6400 (for compostable bioplastics such as PLA) or ASTM D6868 (for paper coated with bioplastic) based on real-world testing in commercial composting facilities. Cradle to Cradle Certified

Product Directory

Cradle to Cradle Certified, maintained by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, certifies a wide array of institutional and consumer products based on multiple environmental, health, and social criteria using a tiered rating system. The current version of their standard (V4.0) includes five categories of sustainability criteria: (1) Material Health, (2) Product Circularity, (3) Clean Air and Climate Protection, (4) Water and Soil Stewardship, and (5) Social Fairness. A product’s overall certification level (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) is equal to the product’s lowest category achievement level. Cradle to Cradle Certified at the Silver and higher levels are often specified as requirements in bid documents because restrictions on chemicals of concern are only included in those tiers. Categories of certified products include building materials, carpet and flooring, cleaning chemicals, food service ware, hand soaps, office furniture, packaging, and more.

Products can earn a Cradle to Cradle Material Health Certificate either on its own or in addition to being Cradle to Cradle Certified (see above) to provide more information about chemicals used. However, it is not a substitute for full Cradle to Cradle certification. This certificate is based on the assessment methodology in the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard for the Material Health category only, and it verifies that chemicals and materials used in the product prioritize the protection of human health and the environment.

Design for the Environment (DfE) Program

Product Directory

Design for the Environment (DfE) is a certification program from the United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies antimicrobial products that meet the health and safety standards of the pesticide registration process required by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and other strict criteria for environmental and human health safety. Products that earn the DfE label use safer chemical ingredients, avoid harmful substances, and meet high standards for performance and transparency. The program helps purchasers choose cleaners, disinfectants, and other products that reduce environmental impact.

DIN-Geprüft

Product Directory
DIN-Geprüftis an international certification program managed by DIN CERTCO, which is part of TÜV Rheinland, that ensures a product is compostable according to EU standard EN 13432. DIN-Geprüft Industrial products are guaranteed to biodegrade in an industrial composting plant. DIN-Geprüft Home products are guaranteed to biodegrade home composting systems. Since DIN-Geprüft Home products are designed to compost at lower temperatures than DIN-Geprüft Industrial products, they can typically also be composted in industrial composting plants.

ENERGY STAR

ENERGY STAR is a certification program for energy-efficient products administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ENERGY STAR certification is available in over 75 residential and commercial product categories including heating and cooling equipment, appliances, water heaters, lighting, building products, and electronics.

ENERGY STAR Most Efficient is a special distinction awarded to the top-performing ENERGY STAR-certified products. The Most Efficient label is updated annually and currently includes, but is not limited to: clothes washers and dryers, refrigerators and freezers, dishwashers, heating and cooling equipment, and computer monitors/signage displays.

EPA Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPGs)

The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPGs) are federal guidelines that promote the purchasing of products made with recovered and recycled materials. The CPGs designate recommended minimum recycled content levels for products including paper, construction materials, landscaping products, and transportation items. Federal agencies and organizations utilizing federal funds are required to follow these guidelines to support markets for recycled materials in the United States.

Product Directory

The Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) is a global ecolabel maintained by the Global Electronics Council (GEC) that identifies green electronic equipment such as computers and displays, imaging equipment, servers, mobile phones, and more. EPEAT certification considers whether products, components, and materials are responsibly sourced and addresses the full lifecycle environmental and social impacts of electronics. EPEAT-registered products must meet required criteria and are rated Bronze, Silver, or Gold based on the number of optional criteria met. All EPEAT registered products meet ENERGY STAR requirements (if applicable).

EPEAT Climate+ is a designation that EPEAT registered products can earn by meeting climate criteria in addition to EPEAT’s product category-specific criteria. EPEAT Climate+ criteria include public and third-party verified greenhouse gas (GHG) disclosures, energy-efficient upstream manufacturing processes, science-based GHG reduction targets, sourcing electricity from renewable energy, and adhering to product energy efficiency standards.

ETL Listed

Product Directory
Electrical Testing Laboratories (ETL) Listed means a product has been tested by Intertek to meet safety standards, typically for electrical, fire, and mechanical safety. Intertek is a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), which is an organization approved by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to test and certify products for compliance with U.S. safety standards. Appliances, electronics, batteries, and more can be ETL Listed.

FDA Logo
FDA Hand Sanitizer Do-Not-Use List

Product Directory

The United States Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Hand Sanitizer Do-Not-Use list identifies hand sanitizing products that contain toxic contaminants, have ineffective active ingredient levels, or manufactured at facilities that are non-compliant with FDA quality standards. The list includes product names, manufacturers, and National Drug Code (NDC) numbers so purchasers can verify product safety. The list is updated regularly.

Product Directory

The United States Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Import Alerts list identifies products and companies whose imports violate US safety or labeling laws. Companies and products are classified into the red, yellow, and green lists. Items on the red and yellow lists are subject to detention without physical examination. The Import Alerts help the FDA quickly identify and block potentially unsafe food, medication, and other products from reaching US consumers.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) 

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a third-party nonprofit that certifies that products are made with sustainably grown and harvested wood or other forest-based products (e.g., bamboo). FSC also verifies the recycled content of products it certifies. FSC-certified products include flooring, furniture, lumber, and other building products as well as paper products such as copy/office paper, cardboard, and janitorial paper.

FSC has several ecolabels. The “FSC Mix” ecolabel means the product is made with a mixture of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC-controlled wood. The “FSC Recycled” ecolabel means the product is made from 100% recycled materials. The “FSC 100%” ecolabel means the product is made entirely from FSC-certified forests. Products may also have a generic FSC label. 

FSC does not maintain a comprehensive directory of certified products. However, FSC-certified products are typically labeled on manufacturer and vendor websites and on product packaging.

GOTS Logo
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a leading international certification for organic textiles that covers the entire supply chain, from raw fiber harvesting through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. IPX4 Rating

Ingress protection (IP) ratings, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission grade the resistance of a product enclosure against the intrusion of dust or liquid. An IPX4 rating indicates that the enclosed electronic components of a device or equipment are protected against splash water from any direction. The ‘X’ indicates that the product was not tested for dust protection.

MAS Certified Green

MAS Certified Green is third-party certification program that verifies that products, like furniture, flooring, paint, and other construction materials, have passed testing for low volatile organic compound (VOC) and chemical emissions helping to promote healthier indoor air quality. The Mulch and Soil Council (MSC) Certification program verifies that bagged mulch and soil products meet strict industry standards for quality, safety, and proper labeling. Mulch and Soil Council Certified All-Natural

The Mulch and Soil Council (MSC) Certified All-Natural certification identifies mulch or soil products that contain only natural, plant-based materials with no artificial colors, chemical additives, or synthetic ingredients. Products are independently verified and must meet the MSC standards for purity, quality, and accurate labeling. The certification helps purchasers easily identify products that are genuinely natural and environmentally responsible, supporting transparency and consistency across the industry.

NSF/ANSI 336 FACTS

The NSF/ANSI 336 Furniture Assessment and Testing Standard (FACTS) label is a third-party sustainability certification for commercial furnishings that evaluates products, manufacturing facilities, and company practices. The standard assesses performance across multiple impact areas, including materials, energy and water use, waste management, indoor air quality, and social responsibility. Products and facilities can achieve Conformance, Silver, Gold, or Platinum levels based on verified performance. Certification is independently audited and recognized by green building and sustainable procurement programs such as LEED.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is an independent, third-party certification that tests textiles and textile components for harmful substances to ensure they are safe for human use. Products are evaluated against strict global criteria covering regulated and non-regulated chemicals, with limit values often exceeding national and international requirements. The standard includes four product classes, with increasingly stringent requirements for items in direct contact with skin, especially products for infants. Ok Compost
OK Compost

Product Directory

OK compost is an international certification program managed by TÜV Austria that ensures a product is compostable according to EU standard EN 13432. OK compost INDUSTRIAL products are guaranteed to biodegrade in an industrial composting plant. OK compost HOME products are guaranteed to biodegrade in home composting systems. Since OK compost HOME products are designed to compost at lower temperatures than OK compost INDUSTRIAL products, they can typically also be composted in industrial composting facilities.

Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) Listed

Product Directory

The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) identifies farm and garden inputs, such as fertilizers, soil amendments, pest controls, mulch, and livestock feed supplements, that are allowed for use in certified organic production under the USDA National Organic Program standards. Products that pass OMRI’s independent reviews of product ingredients and manufacturing processes may display the OMRI Listed seal. This seal indicates that the product is compliant for use in organic agriculture.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international, non-profit organization that promotes sustainable forest management by endorsing national forest certification systems developed through open, multi-stakeholder processes tailored to local conditions. PEFC standards ensure forests are managed in ways that balance ecological, social, and economic values, and its certification includes both forest management and chain-of-custody tracking from forest to final product. National systems must be independently assessed against PEFC’s international Sustainability Benchmarks before endorsement, ensuring global consistency while respecting local contexts. Through this approach, PEFC enables forest owners and companies worldwide to demonstrate responsible forestry and sourcing of forest-based products.

RoHS Compliant Logo
RoHS Compliant

RoHS compliant* means that a product meets the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, which restricts the use of specific hazardous materials in the manufacturing of electrical and electronic products. These materials include lead, mercury, cadmium, and other dangerous substances that can harm human health and the environment.

* There is no directory of RoHS compliant products. However, RoHS compliant products are typically labeled on manufacturer and vendor websites, on product packaging, and on products themselves.

SCS Indoor Advantage is a third-party certification from SCS Global Services that verifies interior products, such as furniture, finishes, and building materials, meet strict indoor air quality standards for low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions to support healthier indoor environments. The standard includes two levels, Indoor Advantage and Indoor Advantage Gold. TCO Certified is a global multi-attribute certification program for IT products managed by TCO Development, and independent organization based in Sweden. U.S. EPA Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPGs)

The U.S. EPA Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPGs) are federal recommendations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) that specify minimum post-consumer and total recycled content levels for eight categories of products – construction, landscaping, miscellaneous, non-paper office, paper, park and recreation, transportation, and vehicular. The U.S. EPA does not certify products that meet the CPGs, but manufacturers and vendors often designate products that meet these guidelines as “EPA CPG compliant” in product listings.

USDA Biobased
USDA Certified Biobased and USDA BioPreferred

USDA Certified Biobased is a single-attribute certification program for biobased products administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture BioPreferred Program. According to the USDA, “biobased products are derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials and provide an alternative to conventional petroleum-derived products.” The USDA has identified minimum biobased content standards for 139 categories of products, which are listed in the BioPreferred Program Catalog. USDA Certified Biobased products include, but are not limited to, adhesives, cleaners, hand soaps, lubricants, printing inks, and deicers and snowmelt products. 

 Purchasers should be aware that while some of the products in this catalog have had their biobased content verified (products with the USDA Certified Biobased logo), other products claim to meet the USDA biobased standards based only on the manufacturer’s claim (products labeled FP for “federal procurement” without the USDA Certified Biobased logo, referred to in the specifications as USDA BioPreferred).

USDA Organic are produced according to the USDA organic standards, which require operations to use practices that cycle resources, conserve biodiversity, and preserve ecological balance. While there is no list of certified products, the USDA does maintain a directory of certified farms and businesses. Look for the USDA Organic seal on products and/or in product information literature.
