New York State Alternative Fueld Vehicles Program
The New York State Alternative Fueled Vehicles (AFV) Program was created through the $1.75 billion Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act of 1996. Section 201-a of this legislation mandated the creation of a “Clean Fueled Vehicles” program within the Office of General Services (OGS) for the purpose of acquiring clean fueled vehicles for state use, and testing and evaluating clean fueled vehicle technologies. The AFV Program is a coordinated effort designed to help agencies, authorities, and state universities acquire and use alternative-fueled vehicles; satisfy federal and state requirements for purchasing such vehicles; and develop a comprehensive, conveniently accessible statewide network of fueling stations to support the state’s fleet of alternative fueled vehicles.
The AFV Program's key goals are to play an important role in addressing New York’s need to restore, preserve and protect its valuable environmental resources; help to reduce air pollutants to ensure a clean environment in New York for current and future generations; and contribute to the nationwide effort to reduce dependence on foreign sources of petroleum to strengthen national security.
